As a Database Administrator at Coolblue you are responsible for structuring data of enormous value.

What you tell your friends you do
“I make sure the digital machine on which Coolblue runs operates smoothly.”

What you will really be doing

  • Keeping our systems healthy and upscaling them when necessary.

  • Maintaining Coolblue's databases.

  • Advising the second-line help desk.

  • Solving malfunctions.

How will you be doing this?

  • You are an all-rounder in a Scrum team. Besides your own specialization you will learn to perform all other tasks within the team.

  • You prioritize your own work together with your team and Product Owner. You will receive immediate feedback from end users and you will have a lot of opportunities to experiment.

  • You will be using the right tools for whatever job will be thrown at you. Choices that were made in the past are not rules.

  • You will work in a motivated team to meet ambitious deadlines. There is always a budget for good ideas.

  • Big data and experience are your gurus, your gut feeling isn't. To measure is to know.

What we have worked on last quarter

  • Migration to the new version of Oracle.

  • Improving the replication to our Development Cluster.

What a day in the office might look like
You click through your mail alerts. Wonderful, no performance issues and all the back-ups went smoothly. You also notice there is a new patch for Oracle Server. Let's test it in a bit and then we'll take it into production later on today. First, it's the stand-up meeting with your colleagues from your Scrum team. Should the memory of one of our database machines be expanded, or not? You are asked to advise. Then, you talk about the patch and what you will be doing with it. After that, it's time to get your hands dirty. You want to be able to remove some jobs from the backlog tomorrow. On the way back your phone rings. It's Thomas from the second-line help desk. One of the databases in the MySQL cluster is responding poorly. Ouch, that could mean slow web pages for our customers. This calls for immediate action: you fix a deadlock and all systems are go, again. That should better not happen during a weekend. So you mark your to-do list: “come up with better failover method for the web database cluster”. Luckily there are no other sudden emergencies. A few hours later you can strike “advise on memory” and “test patch and install” off of your list. It's been a good day. You have helped thousands of customers have a pleasant shopping experience and you have made Coolblue just a little better.

Team
You will be working in a team with three to five network engineers, each of them with their own specialization, including Linux, Windows, Vmware and more. Besides that, you will have weekly meetings with our BI Developers and our Business Analysts. Your team will be managed by a Scrum Master and a Product Owner.

We offer
